Biden Takes Page From Trump's Book, May Send US Military Troops To Southern Border

Zinger Key Points
  • Biden is considering the deployment of 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border to prepare for an influx of migrants.
  • Donald Trump evokes Title 42 during the COVID-19 pandemic, which expires on May 11.

President Joe Biden is reportedly weighing whether to deploy 1,500 U.S. troops to patrol the border with Mexico when Title 42 lifts May 11.

The potential deployment of troops, who would be armed but not assist local law enforcement, would be similar to when former President Donald Trump deployed active-duty military personnel to the southern border throughout his presidency.

Since Trump invoked the law, most migrants crossing into the U.S. have been expelled back to Mexico rather than being detained in the U.S.

The troops would be sourced from multiple active Army units and primarily deployed in administrative and transportation position to alleviate the burden on law enforcement and Border Patrol.

When Title 42 lifts, the Biden administration is expecting an influx of migrants attempting to cross the into the U.S, with possibly tens of thousands winding up at ports of entry along the borders of California, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico.

What Is Title 42?

Title 42, which was first used in 1929 to stop the spread of meningitis from China and the Philippines, is known as the Public Health Service Act. The law was invoked for the second time in history by Trump in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, to make it more difficult for people to illegally cross the border from Mexico into the U.S through giving border officers the ability to expel migrants without going through the asylum process.

When Title 42 ends, a law under Title 8 will automatically come back into effect, which allows officers and border patrol to apply penalties of up to two years in prison for migrants who attempt to enter the U.S. a second time after being expelled, according to NBC News.
