What's Going On With Cruiseliners Stocks like Carnival, Royal Caribbean Cruises Thursday

Cruiseline stocks like Carnival Corp CCLRoyal Caribbean Cruises Ltd RCL, and peers are trading lower Thursday as new research reflects worsening air quality despite emissions limits and industry assurances to go green.

Cruise ships pumped four times more harmful sulphuric gases into the atmosphere in Europe than passenger vehicles in 2022, Financial Times cites a recent research report.

Barcelona topped as the worst-affected port city in Europe for sulfur emissions. Sulfur oxides cause acid rain and aggravate respiratory conditions like asthma and emphysema.

The research flagged that major European port cities were again choking on toxic air pollution from cruise ships.

Carnival, the biggest cruise operator, had the highest sulfur emissions of any operator, with its fleet of 63 ships emitting 43% more sulfur oxides than all of Europe’s passenger vehicles.

Although cruise ships account for a fraction of the emissions linked to the broader global shipping industry, regulators, politicians, and activists urged the industry to clean up its environmental record.

A host of European port cities, including Palma de Mallorca, Marseille, Dubrovnik, and Santorini, placed restrictions on the industry in recent years.

Price Actions: CCL shares traded lower by 1.54% at $15.36 premarket on the last check Thursday. RCL shares traded lower by 1.81% at $93.01.
