It's All About The Battery
While EVs are undoubtedly more eco-friendly than their petrol-fueled counterparts, the current battery production processes require further sustainability improvements. Innolith's I-State battery stands as a testament to the company's commitment to not only make EVs accessible to the masses but also augment their sustainability.
Traditional lithium-ion batteries involve environmentally harmful mining for materials and are challenging to recycle, despite promising progress on this front. The I-State battery technology significantly mitigates these negatives by slashing the carbon footprint and manufacturing costs of EV batteries and enhancing their energy density.
The I-State battery is pioneering because of its use of an inorganic liquid electrolyte that enables the battery to operate at higher voltages than regular lithium-ion batteries. This leads to enhanced energy density, substantially decreases the risk of fire and improves performance across a broad temperature range.

In terms of material usage, the I-State battery requires 20% fewer rare-earth metals per kilowatt-hour compared to its lithium-ion counterparts. Coupled with the recyclability and local sourcing of its electrolyte, this battery exemplifies sustainable innovation.
Based in Basel, Switzerland, Innolith was founded over two decades ago by Laurent Zinck, Ph.D., and Markus Borck. They envisaged a universally electrified world and spent 18 years investigating liquid electrolyte technology. In 2019, Innolith's battery technology experienced a breakthrough that revolutionized e-mobility industries.
Innolith's groundbreaking I-State battery technology is a significant stride toward making EVs both more affordable and sustainable. Given that transportation is a leading source of harmful greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the number of EVs on the road is critical.
"Conventional Li-ion has served us well for 40 years but has well-known limitations for the future," Innolith CEO Konstantin Solodovnikov told JustAuto. "I-State goes further, costs less and is environmentally more sustainable."
Following extensive testing and pilot production, the I-State battery is now ready for commercial deployment.
