Google Flight Feature Reveals Optimal Booking Times For Christmas Travel

In a revelation that could change holiday travel preparations, Google has declared that the best time to book air travel for the Christmas season is approximately 71 days prior to the departure date, Business Insider reported.

The tech giant analyzed historical data on U.S. flights and recommends booking between Oct. 13 and Oct. 15 for the best deals on travel from Dec. 23 to Dec. 25.

The company’s analysis of average airfares from 2018 to 2023 for the top 4,000 US markets also revealed that the best time to book U.S.-Europe flights is 72 days or more prior to departure.

This advice contrasts with its previous recommendations in 2022 that the best time to book Christmas flights was 22 days before departure and U.S.-Europe flights should be booked 50 days or more prior to departure.

The “cheapest time to book” feature complements Google Flights’ existing travel insight tools which inform about flight prices as well as a new pilot program for price guarantees.

The U.S. Travel Association anticipates a surge in domestic trips in 2023, surpassing 2019’s numbers for the first time since the onset of the pandemic. The association projects about 2.4 billion domestic trips in 2023.
