Trump Praises Russian President Backing His Ukraine Peace Plan: 'That Means What I'm Saying Is Right'

Donald Trump positively reacted as Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, expressed support for the former U.S. president’s strategy to end the war in Ukraine.

What Happened: Trump, during an NBC’s “Meet the Press” interview, lauded Putin’s commendation for the ex-president’s repeated promises to resolve the Ukrainian conflict within 24 hours.

NBC's Kristen Welker asked Trump, "President Putin said, quote, ‘We surely hear that Mr. Trump says he will resolve all burning issues within several days, including the Ukrainian crisis. We cannot help but feel happy about it.' What do you make of that? Do you welcome this support?"

In response, Trump, who is leading the GOP race, said, “I like that he said that. Because that means what I'm saying is right.”

However, his plan to resolve the conflict has sparked worry among Ukrainian officials due to its perceived oversimplification, raising concerns about a potential U.S. compromise of Ukrainian territory to Russia.

Why It Matters: Despite global condemnation of Putin's unprovoked attack on Ukraine, Trump highlighted his cordial relationship with the Russian head. He defended this association, stating, “Getting along is OK. But I got along through strength.”

"I got along with Putin. Let me tell you, I got along with him really well. And that's a good thing, not a bad thing," Trump said.

"He's got 1,700 nuclear missiles. And so do we. But, look, that's a good thing."

Trump’s presidency was often criticized for his alignment with Putin, notably when he backed Putin against U.S. intelligence agencies on the issue of Russian interference in American elections.
