Technology company Qualcomm Inc QCOM announced several new product launches and initiatives on Tuesday. Many of the new launches center on the company positioning itself to be a leader in artificial intelligence.
What Happened: Looking to boost its presence in the artificial intelligence space, Qualcomm shared news Tuesday that could make it one of the few companies delivering generative AI across device categories.
Qualcomm announced the new Snapdragon X Elite, which will be used to power Windows PCs into the “modern AI era.” The products are expected to launch in mid-2024.
“Built for AI, Snapdragon X Elite is the most powerful, intelligent, and efficient processor ever created for Windows in its class,” the company said.
The Snapdragon X Elite features the Qualcomm AI Engine, which can help power experiences like security, productivity assistants and video conferencing. The new platform can also run generative AI large language models with “blazing-fast speeds.”
The company also announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which will bring large language models to smartphones in 2024. This marks the company’s first mobile platform designed with generative AI in mind and could help the company be a partner of choice for Android experiences. The new launch is expected to be available in flagship Android devices in the coming weeks.
Qualcomm also announced it is bringing generative AI to device categories, including devices and applications. The company said this technology could help consumers “seamlessly link multiple devices across multiple OSes.”
The new Snapdragon Seamless features cross-platform technology that can allow devices using Android, Windows and Snapdragon platforms to discover each other and share information with each other to work as an integrated system.
“We are entering the era of AI, and on-device generative AI will play a critical role in delivering powerful, fast, personal, efficient, secure and highly optimized experiences,” Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said. “Snapdragon is uniquely positioned to help shape and capitalize on the on-device AI opportunity and you will see generative AI going virtually everywhere that Snapdragon goes.”
Qualcomm hosted the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii on Tuesday, with the news being shared for the first time publicly. The event continues on Wednesday and Thursday.

Why It’s Important: The new device launches and integration of artificial intelligence show that Qualcomm is focused on building out its devices and partnerships through AI.
The company shared Tuesday that a Deloitte survey shows the average U.S. household has an average of 21 different digital devices. In many cases, the devices don’t communicate with each other and users often buy products based on the existing devices they own and their compatibility.
“Snapdragon Seamless fundamentally breaks down the barriers between OEMs, devices and operating systems. It’s the only cross-device solution to truly put the user first,” Qualcomm VP and GM of wearables and mixed-signal solutions Dino Bekis said.
Qualcomm names companies like Microsoft Corporation MSFT, Xiamoi, ASUS, Honor, Lenovo, OPPO, and Android, a unit of Alphabet Inc GOOGGOOGL as companies collaborating on the multi-device experience with Snapdragon Seamless.
Other partners named during the company’s presentations Tuesday include Meta Platforms META and HP.
