Is It A Phone? Is It A Watch? No... It's Motorola's New Concept Phone That 'Bends' Reality

Zinger Key Points
  • Motorola has unveiled a new concept phone that can be used as both a smartphone and a smartwatch.
  • The concept phone uses a flexible display that can be bent and shaped into different form factors.

Motorola has shown off a wild new concept phone with a foldable display that can wrap around your wrists. Effectively, this Motorola concept phone doubles up as both a phone as well as a smartwatch.

What Happened: Motorola showed off a new concept phone at the Lenovo Tech World '23, revealing a phone that you can wrap around your wrists. Forget smartwatches; this flexible display reminds us of plastic bands that snap onto the wrist.

Motorola's Mobility division, which Lenovo now owns, showed off the prototype device with a flexible display that bends at multiple points. Motorola calls it the "Adaptive Display Concept", and true to its name, it can be "bent and shaped" into different form factors.

Motorola's prototype also looks thin for something that actually packs in the firepower of an actual phone instead of just a display. It also does not use a hinge like every foldable and flip phone currently does, so that helps it maintain a thin profile and look like a normal phone.

"The adaptive display concept can be adjusted from a standard Android phone experience in a flat position to being wrapped for a wrist-worn experience or positioned in several stand modes," Motorola said in a press release.

The company says that this phone features a 6.9-inch display and offers a full smartphone experience powered by Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG GOOGL Google Android operating system.

This Motorola concept phone can also be used upright on a desk – the bottom part can simply be bent to make the phone a stand of its own. This leaves the user with a 4.6-inch usable screen, and Motorola says this still offers the regular smartphone experience.

Why It Matters: Motorola has been at the center of several extremely cool and futuristic concepts and innovations regarding smartphones.

Motorola has a rich history of innovative ideas, from the iconic Razr flip phones to modern-day Razr phones with foldable displays, fully rollable phones, and phones with modular add-ons that snap on the back.

Whether this new concept phone sees the light of the day or not is different, but it looks extremely cool.
