In a recent development, Nikki Haley, a contender in the GOP presidential primary, took a jab at her rival, former President Donald Trump, with a Halloween costume that pokes fun at his potential re-election chances.
What Happened: On Thursday, Haley, a potential GOP candidate for the 2024 presidential election, used X to share a photo of a mock Halloween costume, reported The Hill. The costume, labeled as the “Weakest General Election Candidate Ever,” was labeled carrying “accessories” such as “$50M in legal fees,” “terrible poll numbers,” “social media rants,” and “temper tantrums.” The package humorously notes that it does not include a “private jet” and “Diet Coke.”
In her post, Haley wrote, “Democrats are ecstatic about the prospect of running against Donald Trump. They couldn't dream up a worse general election candidate if they tried. Between his legal drama, his terrible poll numbers, and his confusion, Trump will hand Democrats a big victory.”
Despite this jibe, a recent poll suggests that Trump still holds a significant lead over Haley in the GOP race. According to a Monmouth University-Washington Post poll, Trump has the support of 58% of potential Republican primary voters in South Carolina, where Haley previously served as governor.
Trump, on the other hand, has warned that anyone who contributes to Haley’s campaign will be “permanently barred from the MAGA camp,” as he posted on Truth Social last week.
Why It Matters: Haley’s post is the latest in a series of public spats between her and Trump. Despite her efforts, a recent poll indicates that Trump holds a significant lead in the GOP nomination race, with 58% of potential Republican primary voters in South Carolina backing him. This is a significant lead considering Haley’s strong ties to the state where she served as governor.
Haley recently also launched an ad campaign that aims at both Trump and President Joe Biden, characterizing them as “decrepit, doddering old fools.”
