British billionaire Richard Branson has expressed his opposition to the death penalty following a controversial execution in Texas.
What Happened: On Friday, Branson posted his stance on capital punishment following the execution of Ivan Cantu, a Texas man who claimed innocence till his last breath on X, formerly Twitter.
“The best way to avoid executing innocent people is to stop executing people,” Branson wrote along with attaching a report by the Associated Press about Cantu.
Associated Press reported that Cantu was executed on February 28, 2024, after his conviction more than two decades ago. He claimed his conviction was based on false testimony and questionable evidence.
Why It Matters: Branson’s comments come in the backdrop of an ongoing debate about the justice system’s ability to determine guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The execution of Cantu, who had consistently claimed innocence and attributed his conviction to false testimony and questionable evidence, has reignited this debate.
In January, Alabama carried out the first execution by nitrogen gas, igniting questions whether such a method violates the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment.
