A fan of Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) has seemingly picked up the specifications of the company’s upcoming R2 vehicle and it seems better than its competitor, Tesla‘s Model Y.
What Happened: As per the data leaked from Rivian’s website by Chris Hilbert using Web Inspector, the R2 will have a range of up to 330 miles. It can reportedly go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds, making it faster than the Model Y, with a better range.
The Rivian vehicle, with a starting price of $47,500, is also about three inches taller than its Tesla counterpart but shorter in overall vehicle length as per the leaked specs.
Why It Matters: R2 is expected to be Rivian's candidate to compete against Tesla's best-selling Model Y SUV. Both of Rivian's existing vehicles- the R1T truck and the R1S SUV- are priced at the higher-end around $70,000, making them closer in price to Tesla's more premium Model X SUV than its mass-market offerings.
The R2 will be more compact while retaining the brand's essence, as detailed by a company executive during the company's last earnings call in November. It is scheduled to be unveiled on March 7 at an event in Laguna Beach.
However, the R2 will only start production in 2026, unlike Model Y which is already in production and also won the accolade of being the best-selling vehicle across the globe last year. Further, the starting price on the Model Y is currently lower than R2’s reported price by about $3,500.
