I Struggled With Toxic Boss So Much, I Thought I Had No Option But To Quit: But Then These 5 Things I Did Made It Better

More often than not, most people in their careers encounter challenging bosses at some point. But, the toxic ones make the task of doing the actual job especially daunting. Someone once told me, that life isn't supposed to be so difficult that you cannot even breathe, let alone work efficiently.

So, here are five practical steps I took to improve my situation while dealing with a toxic boss.

Set Boundaries: Politely But Firmly

This step is a good way to approach both personal and professional relationships. Once you assert your boundaries politely yet firmly, it prevents them from overstepping and breaking your peace of mind.

Redirect Focus: Be Professional Toward Your Work, Don't Overthink

This might not be the most healthy way to deal with toxicity, but in most cases, we are not in a situation to quit or yell profanities at our boss. So, focus on the work instead of getting caught up in the negativity.

Seek Support: Reach Out To Trusted Colleagues, Friends And Mentors

Always keep in mind that you don't have to deal with any problem alone. Keep a steady support system at least outside of work. Your trusted colleagues, friends, or mentors can give you suggestions and provide a perspective that you might be missing out on.

Document Incidents: Because Information Is Power

We've all heard the saying, "Knowledge is Power," but sometimes that's not enough. So, keep a record of any incident or mistreatment behavior from your boss. The documentation can be valuable when you decide to escalate the issue to your HR representative or the higher-ups.

Explore Options: You Deserve To Work In A Healthy Work Environment

Having a toxic boss is not the end of the world. If you think working with them won't be a long-term option, try to get transferred to a different team. You can also pursue new job opportunities.

I learned it the hard way, a good boss doesn't make you feel insignificant, but someone who is deserving of all the validation they are getting.
