To Mark Cuban, There's No Doubt: Donald Trump's Billionaire Tech Backers Know 'They Can Manipulate Him' Because Of This

Mark Cuban, the outspoken billionaire and "Shark Tank" star, has never shied away from sharing his political thoughts, especially regarding former President Donald Trump. In a recent interview with Brian Tyler Cohen, Cuban explained why he believes some of Silicon Valley's wealthiest players are backing Trump – they think they can control him.

Don't Miss:

"I think they believe they can manipulate him," Cuban said during the interview. "I think they understand that he's so transactional and so devoid of core values that anything that they want, they can manipulate him to get."

Cuban named Big Tech figures like Elon Musk, the Winklevoss twins, and Andreessen Horowitz founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz as examples of Trump's supporters from the tech world. According to him, these powerful people are more interested in having power over someone they believe is susceptible to manipulation than they are in Trump’s policies.

He clarified that Trump is a prime candidate for manipulation because of his erratic behavior and eagerness to strike deals with anyone who presents him with something of value. Cuban called this approach "the Roy Cohn school of management," referencing Trump's former mentor who was known for ruthless, win-at-all-costs tactics.

"Those are the kind of guys you want to negotiate against because you can be in a negotiation for any type of business or any type of circumstances and just hit them with something that’s going to piss them off or freak them out and you have the edge," Cuban added.

While Cuban is critical of Trump, some in Silicon Valley back him because they like his business-friendly policies, such as tax cuts and fewer regulations. They believe these moves help boost innovation and the economy, even if they don't agree with everything he does.

Nevertheless, he didn't hold back regarding Elon Musk, either. Cuban noted that Musk's decision to align with Trump has more to do with power than profits. "Having the power to manipulate the most powerful man in the world is far more valuable than any amount of [electric vehicle] sales from Tesla," Cuban said.

Cuban, who supports Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election, contrasted her values with Trump's. He maintained that Trump is only concerned with serving the interests of large corporations and himself, whereas Harris concentrates on assisting small businesses and generating economic opportunities for everyone.

“He hasn’t done anything to help small business owners,” Cuban said, citing Harris’s proposals to boost support for startups, such as increasing the startup tax deduction from $5,000 to $50,000 and giving business owners easier access to child care.

"You want somebody who has character, empathy and is ethical when it comes to making difficult decisions," Cuban said. "I can't even imagine why people consider Donald Trump because of his lack of character and ethics."
