US Stocks Mixed; McDonald's Posts Upbeat Earnings

U.S. stocks traded mixed this morning, with the Dow Jones index edging lower on Tuesday.

Following the market opening Tuesday, the Dow traded down 0.04% to 42,370.65 while the NASDAQ rose 0.06% to 18,577.63. The S&P 500 also fell, dropping, 0.05% to 5,820.82.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Communication services shares rose by 0.5% on Tuesday.

In trading on Tuesday, utilities shares fell by 1.6%.

Top Headline

McDonald's Corporation MCD posted better-than-expected third-quarter earnings on Tuesday.

The company reported third-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $3.23, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $3.20. Quarterly sales of $6.90 billion beat the analyst consensus view of $6.82 billion. Revenues increased 3% (2% in constant currencies) over the prior year.

  • GlycoMimetics, Inc. GLYC shares shot up 211% to $0.5292 after the company announced it will merge with Crescent Biopharma and secured $200 in funding to advance its oncology pipeline.
  • Shares of BIO-key International, Inc. BKYI got a boost, surging 99% to $1.3104 after the company announced it received a $910K order from a long-time financial services customer to upgrade its biometric customer identification technology.
  • Shuttle Pharmaceuticals Holdings, Inc. SHPH shares were also up, gaining 40% to $1.85 after the company announced it finalized agreements with all six of the planned site enrollment locations to administer the Phase 2 clinical trial of Ropidoxuridine.

Equities Trading DOWN

  • 1847 Holdings LLC EFSH shares dropped 65% to $0.4426 after the company priced an $11.1 million public offering at $1.26 per unit.
  • Shares of Hanryu Holdings, Inc. HRYU were down 43% to $0.2893.
  • Primega Group Holdings Limited PGHL was down, falling 42% to $10.99.

Commodities

In commodity news, oil traded up 0.3% to $67.61 while gold traded up 0.8% at $2,778.10.

Silver traded up 1.7% to $34.580 on Tuesday, while copper fell 0.1% to $4.3625.

Euro zone

European shares closed lower today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 slipped 0.2%, Germany's DAX fell 0.1% and France's CAC 40 slipped 0.1%. Spain's IBEX 35 Index fell 0.5%, while London's FTSE 100 fell 0.4%.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed mixed on Tuesday, with Japan's Nikkei 225 gaining 0.77%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index gaining 0.49%, China's Shanghai Composite Index falling 1.08% and India's BSE Sensex surging 0.45%.

Economics

  • The number of job openings declined by 418,000 to 7.443 million in September versus a revised 7.861 million in the previous month and below market estimates of 7.99 million.
  • The FHFA house price index rose 0.3% in August, above market estimates of a 0.2% rise.
  • The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index rose 5.2% year-over-year in August versus a 5.9% gain in July.
  • U.S. wholesale inventories declined by 0.1% month-over-month to $905 billion in September compared to revised 0.2% gain in the earlier month.
  • The U.S. trade deficit increased to $108.2 billion in September from the $94.2 billion gap in the previous month.
