Elon Musk Says He's A Top 20 Diablo 4 Player: 'Embarrassing How Much I Play'

Zinger Key Points
  • Elon Musk is a fan of video games and has often praised "Diablo IV."
  • A claim that Elon Musk is one of the top 20 "Diablo IV" players generated attention to the game.

Billionaire Elon Musk is best known for leading several companies including Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company and X, but he also enjoys playing video games, one of his passions from a young age.

Musk recently made a bold claim about how good he is at Diablo IV.

What Happened: Among the topics Musk discussed with Joe Rogan on a recent episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience" podcast is how good the billionaire is at "Diablo IV," a video game released in 2023.

Musk announced on the podcast that he was one of the top 20 players in the world on the game, a list that includes only two Americans. Dexerto shared an image of Musk ranking 19th on X.

Musk’s claim led to some skepticism, but the billionaire turned out to be telling the truth, at least at the time.

Forbes reports that Musk was ranked 19th in the world for timed runs of Pit 150 in the video game.

After Musk’s claim and verification, the billionaire has been knocked out of the top 20 and is currently ranked 22nd. First is American player Resistance, who holds the world record time of 1:59, twelve seconds ahead of second place. Musk's time is 2:45.

Why It's Important: Musk has live-streamed playing Diablo IV before and has actively praised the game, which is now owned by Microsoft Corporation MSFT thanks to the company's acquisition of Blizzard Entertainment.

While Musk's livestreams have shown his knowledge of the game, some are still skeptical that it was he who completed this top 25 time and not someone playing on his account.

What impresses many and also generates skepticism is Musk's running of several of the world's largest companies and recently helping to campaign for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. The big question for a man who works many hours a week is where he finds the time for video games.

"Video games are my main non-work, non-family/friends activity. It's a bit embarrassing how much I play tbh," Musk tweeted Tuesday.

A leaderboard can be found at Helltides, but it is not affiliated with the gaming company. The rankings are instead based on screen-recorded runs that are shared by the players, according to a report from The Verge. The leaderboard for the timed runs has only 881 submissions, leading to skepticism about where Musk would really rank.

Helltides.com co-owner Fayz told The Verge the leaderboard on the site is "the best global list we have"

"Elon's claim is valid," Fayz told The Verge.

The site's co-owner acknowledged questions about whether better players might exist, but noted that without recorded and shared Pit runs, there's no way to know for sure.

With Musk making the claim and it being verified, there's likely a higher chance that Diablo IV players or gamers in general start trying to knock him down the leaderboard so they can claim they beat the world's richest person.

The increased attention on Diablo IV could also help the Microsoft gaming segment. In the recently reported first quarter, Microsoft’s Xbox content and services gaming division saw revenue up 61% year over year helped mainly by the impact of the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
