Elon Musk Announced Tesla's Berlin Gigafactory 5 Years Ago Today: Here's How EV Giant's Mega Factory Has Evolved

EV giant Tesla Inc. TSLA on Tuesday reminisced CEO Elon Musk announcing its first and sole gigafactory in Europe located near Berlin five years ago in 2019.

What Happened: “Happy 5th Gigaversary,” Tesla wrote on social media platform X. The post was adjoined by a video of the company’s achievements at the factory.

Musk announced the facility on Nov. 12, 2019, at the Das Goldene Lenkrad award show. Construction commenced and it was officially opened in March 2022.

The company has produced over 400,000 Model Y vehicles which were delivered to 37 countries and over 500,000 drive units to date at the factory. The company also hired over 12,000 people, it said in the video posted on its five-year anniversary.

The factory in Berlin is Tesla's one and only in Europe. It has a current installed annual vehicle capacity of over 375,000 Model Ys.

Why It Matters: Last month, it was reported that the company has been granted approval by the local government ministry near its gigafactory in Berlin to proceed with the first stage of its three-stage plant expansion plan despite protests from locals.

Locals have been protesting against the company’s plans to increase vehicle manufacturing capacity to a million units per year at the plant, citing environmental concerns.

Tesla sales are on a slump in Europe.

According to data from the  European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA), Tesla had 249,337 new car registrations in the European Union, European Free Trade Association, and the United Kingdom put together from January till the end of September, marking a drop of about 9% from the corresponding period from last year.
