Warner Bros Discovery WBD and Jinjiang International have unveiled plans to establish a “Harry Potter Studio Tour” in Shanghai. This venture is part of a broader renovation project, with the opening slated for 2027.
What Happened: Warner Bros and Chinese conglomerate Jinjiang International have decided to construct a “Harry Potter Studio Tour” in Shanghai, reported Reuters. The planned theme park will give visitors a glimpse into the making of the Harry Potter movies and recreate memorable scenes in an area spanning over 53,000 square meters. However, the project is yet to receive regulatory approval.
This will be the third “Harry Potter Studio Tour” by Warner Bros globally, joining the existing locations in London and Tokyo, but is likely to be nearly four times bigger than the London park inaugurated in 2012.
Although foreign films account for only a small portion of China’s total box office due to strict quotas and a strong preference for local productions, the Harry Potter series remains hugely popular in the country.
The tour is designed to give visitors an immersive experience, highlighting the magic of filmmaking, the brilliant designs, and the unique creativity behind the Harry Potter films, while offering an in-depth exploration of the magical world of Harry Potter.
Why It Matters: This move comes in the wake of Warner Bros. Discovery’s restructuring plan, approved in December 2024. The new corporate structure divided Warner Bros. Discovery into two distinct operating divisions: Global Linear Networks and Streaming & Studios.
The latter division, which includes film and entertainment studios, is responsible for managing its intellectual property portfolio. The upcoming “Harry Potter Studio Tour” in Shanghai is a part of this division aimed at leveraging the company’s intellectual property to expand its global footprint.
Warner Bros. has been growing the Harry Potter franchise beyond films, exploring ventures such as the Fantastic Beasts spin-off, theater productions, studio tours, video games, and a new TV series set to debut on Max in 2026.
As per a company filing in October, Warner Bros’ Harry Potter studio tour near London surpassed £100 million (approximately $124 million) in profit for the year ended December 2022 while generating over 100 new jobs to meet the growing demand for the attraction.
