BroadSoft Powers Satellite VoIP Calling
GAITHERSBURG, MD--(Marketwire - August 18, 2009) - BroadSoft, Inc., the leading worldwide
provider of VoIP applications, today announced its involvement in the
industry's first smartphone to smartphone VoIP call by mobile
communications provider TerreStar Networks Inc. (TerreStar), a
majority-owned subsidiary of TerreStar Corporation (NASDAQ: TSTR).
On July 20, TerreStar announced the completion of an end-to-end VoIP call
over TerreStar-1, the world's largest, most advanced commercial
communications satellite. BroadSoft's VoIP application platform,
BroadWorks®, was used to route the call over TerreStar's all-IP core
network.
TerreStar Networks has selected BroadWorks to power its new mobile
broadband network service, which is expected to launch later this year.
TerreStar's satellite terrestrial mobile network will provide voice, data
and video services to help solve critical communication and business
continuity challenges faced by government and emergency responders. The
service also will be marketed to rural communities and enterprises that
need "anywhere" coverage throughout the United States and Canada.
"When building our network, we searched for the most reliable strategic
partners to future-proof our platform. We recognized BroadWorks as the
superior solution for our new service, meeting our requirements for
carrier-grade reliability, scalability, performance, and next-generation
capabilities that can deliver future services as required," said Dennis
Matheson, chief technology officer for TerreStar Networks. "We believe
selecting BroadWorks helps strengthen our IP infrastructure and supports
our long-term strategy to offer next-generation mobile communications
across North America."
"We are pleased to be part of the foundation for TerreStar's new integrated
satellite terrestrial service launching later this year," said Scott
Hoffpauir, chief technology officer at BroadSoft®. "BroadSoft's
expertise and market leadership in delivering IP communications solutions
across a variety of networks will enable TerreStar to add more flexibility
to their network and quickly adapt to changing service requirements. The
recent demonstration underscores the versatility, flexibility and power of
BroadWorks and its ability to work in a satellite-terrestrial environment."
