Suncor Unveils Wind Project - Analyst Blog

Suncor Energy Products Inc.’s plan to develop the 88 megawatt (MW) Wintering Hills Wind Power Project has been approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC). The project is on around 16,000 acres of privately-owned land located approximately 125 kilometers (km) northeast of Calgary and 21 km southeast of Drumheller, Alberta.  Suncor Energy Products Inc is a subsidiary of Canada’s premier energy company Suncor Energy Inc. (SU).

The project will involve the installation of up to 55 1.6 MW windmill turbines capable of generating adequate power for 35,000 homes and counterbalance 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide emitted every year. Suncor plans to begin construction in the summer of 2010 and complete by the end of 2011.

Wintering Hills is Suncor Energy’s fifth venture as the company already has joint ownership in four other renewable power projects in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario wind farms with a combined generating capacity of 147 MW.

Management feels that the approval will take the company closer to its goal of developing the largest operated wind project till date and aid Suncor’s plan to develop sustainable energy. We acknowledge the company’s efficiency in achieving growth for  this form of natural energy, considering that wind projects are not only eco-friendly, given significantly less emissions of  greenhouse gases, but also economically feasible.

The parent company, Suncor Energy Inc., together with its subsidiaries, explores, acquires, develops, produces and markets crude oil and natural gas in addition to refining crude oil, petroleum, and petrochemical products. The company sells its products in the United States, Canada and Europe.
