GD Expands Product Line - Analyst Blog

General Dynamics Corp. (GD), through its information technology unit General Dynamics Itronix, launched four new ultra-thin client computers expanding the company’s line of Tadpole products. The four new Tadpole ultra-thin clients include: the Tadpole® M1000, Tadpole M1500, Tadpole Pulsar and Tadpole Pulsar Premium. 

The company’s four new ultra-thin clients enable computer-like performance, including strong connectivity and high-speed computing that users expect when working on a company network locally or connecting worldwide using a virtual private network (VPN). 

While appearing like a typical personal computer (PC), ultra-thin clients perform in a similar fashion when connected to a server. However, General Dynamics’ Tadpole ultra-thin clients have various features which differ from a computer. Tadpoles are free of hard drives, memory, operating system or application software, virtually immunizing the units against viruses and security issues associated with lost or stolen computers. 

Other features include: 'Instant-on' access to customized user environments from any thin client on networks including 3G, LAN or WAN; simple plug-and-play set up or replacement for one, or one thousand ultra-thin clients; 50% less power consumption than a PC, a 'green' computing alternative; high-resolution, daylight-viewable displays; and integrated VPN. 

Specific details of the new General Dynamics’ Tadpoles are: first, Tadpole M1000 is a three-pound device designed for distributed, highly mobile users and general purpose computing. Second, Tadpole M1500, high-performance notebook, features a 15-inch LCD screen that supports high-definition multimedia, 3-D imaging and video and all of the features of the M1000. Third, Tadpole Pulsar is a wireless desktop unit configured for complex operations including dual displays, optical networking, high-definition multimedia, 3-D video and imaging. Fourth, Tadpole Pulsar Premium is a wireless desktop unit for general-purpose computing.

Core computing is moving from the end-user to secure centralized servers. Enabling this transition, the Tadpole line of ultra-thin clients, allow information technology (IT) teams to work on server-based capabilities and business process efficiencies, while saving costs incurred on IT security, administration, help-desk and other expenses.
