Fresenius Provides Safety Tips - Analyst Blog

Fresenius Medical Care North America (“FMCNA”), a part of Fresenius Medical Care (FMS), recently reminded patients undergoing dialysis treatment to take safety precautions, so that they are not taken by surprise when inclement winter weather paralyses life in their locality.

Dialysis is a life-preserving treatment that removes waste material from the blood and controls the physical chemistry on the event of kidney failure. Patients on dialysis typically need ongoing treatment unless they benefit from a kidney transplant.

Dialysis patients usually require treatment once every 2 to 3 days. Consequently, they are in danger when poor driving conditions make travel to their clinic hazardous. Delays in treatment may threaten life.

Fresenius recommends that patients should implement the following instructions. Firstly, they should keep their emergency phone numbers at hand. FMCNA provides a hotline for any patient who seeks help searching the location of their nearest dialysis facility. Secondly, kidney patients are advised to keep a handy disaster plan. Moreover, Fresenius advises patients to maintain emergency supplies such as first-aid kit, flashlights, cell phone and vital medication.

Also, in-center patients are requested to ensure that they have a ride to the clinic while home dialysis patients should plan for power outages. Finally, diabetic patients are encouraged to ask their medical practitioner how to modify their dosage of insulin during winter storms.

Fresenius is the number one global provider of products and services for patients undergoing dialysis treatment due to chronic kidney failure. The company operates a network of dialysis clinics across North America and overseas markets to provide dialysis treatment to patients.

Fresenius is also the world's largest provider of dialysis products. The company's primary competitor in the U.S. is DaVita Inc. (DVA), which also provides dialysis services for patients suffering from chronic kidney failure or end stage renal disease (“ESRD”).
