Stocks dip after unemployment applications rise

Stocks fall after government says more people applied for unemployment benefits last week

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks fell slightly Thursday after the government said more people applied for unemployment benefits last week.

The Labor Department said 445,000 people applied for unemployment insurance as retailers eliminated temporary holiday workers. That's up 35,000 from the previous week and the highest level since October.

“It was a disappointing number,” said Kim Caughey Forrest, an analyst at Fort Pitt Capital.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 33 points, or 0.3 percent, to 11,721 in early trading.
