Stocks slide after unemployment claims jump

Stocks slide for a second day in a row after unemployment claims reach 8-month high

NEW YORK (AP) — Renewed worries about the health of the job market are driving stocks lower after the government reported an unexpected jump in unemployment claims.

The Labor Department said that first-time claims for unemployment benefits rose last week to the highest level in eight months. The report raised concerns about Friday's monthly jobs report.

Companies that reported strong earnings rose. Whole Foods Market gained 1 percent after its quarterly report topped Wall Street's estimates. Estee Lauder is also up 1 percent after it said earnings doubled on stronger sales.

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 86 points, or 0.7 percent, to 12,638 in midday trading. The S&P 500 is down 6, or 0.5 percent, to 1,341. The Nasdaq composite is up 2, or 0.1 percent, to 2,830.
