Stocks dip on weak Google earnings and a mixed housing construction report

Stocks are retreating in early trading after Google’s profit failed to impress investors and a new housing report continues to show the struggles in that sector.

Concerns about rising costs at Google more than outweighed stronger-than-expected earnings from General Electric and Bank of America. Both GE and Bank of America say the economy is improving and loan losses are moderating.

The Commerce Department says housing construction rose to a 16-month high in March. However, construction fell for single-family homes, the most important segment of the market.

In early trading Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 21.46, or 0.2 percent at 11,123.11. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is down 3.26, or 0.3 percent, at 1,208.41, while the Nasdaq composite index is down 10.39, or 0.4 percent, at 2,505.30.
