Reports suggest that Google aims to integrate satellite-based texting features into Android phones through the Google Messages app. Developer Neil Rahmouni discovered code in the latest Google Messages app version, indicating a collaboration with Garmin for emergency satellite-based communications. The feature is anticipated to roll out after the stable release of Android 14 in over 150 countries.

Garmin, known for its products with satellite-based connectivity for emergency texting, collaborates with Iridium, a global Low Earth Orbit satellite constellation company. Google is expected to leverage Garmin’s established ecosystem for this initiative.

Apple pioneered the satellite-based emergency SOS system for smartphones, followed by Huawei. Initially expected to introduce a similar feature with the Galaxy S23, Samsung postponed it, citing an unready ecosystem. Rumors now hint at its debut with the Galaxy S24 next year.
