Kevin McCarthy Resigning From Congress After Being Ousted As Top House Republican? Here's What Former GOP Speaker Said

The former Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), dismissed any speculation of his early resignation from Congress before his term ends in 2025 after being ousted from speakership.

What Happened: McCarthy swatted away any rumors of his impending resignation from Congress On Friday, CBS News reported. McCarthy, who was compelled to relinquish his position as Speaker earlier this week, stated emphatically, “I’m not resigning.”

The rumor mill started churning when media reports suggested that the California Republican was contemplating resignation. Were this to be true, it would mean McCarthy might sidestep serving the remainder of his term as a standard member of Congress after his removal from the Speaker’s role.

According to Politico, McCarthy had indicated his intention to stay at least through the speakership election before potentially ending his House career. The recent denial puts these speculations to rest and confirms McCarthy’s intent to continue his political career, at least for the time being.

Why It Matters: Earlier this week, a “motion to vacate” introduced by Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) was passed, leading to McCarthy’s announcement that he won’t be running for the Speaker’s position again.

The upcoming Speaker elections will be supervised by Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry, the speaker pro tempore. Notably, both Republican Rep. Jim Jordan and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise have already thrown their hats into the ring.

McCarthy, an active member of the House since 2007 under the tenure of former President George W. Bush, also confirmed his intention to run for reelection in the coming year.
