RNC Chair Says GOP 'Can't Afford' House Speakership Race Taking Too Long: 'Cannot Have Another Chaotic Turnover'

The Republican National Committee, or RNC, Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel urged her party to speed up the House Speaker race, warning that delays could be detrimental to the GOP.

What Happened: McDaniel, in an interview on Fox News, stated that the country and the Republican party “cannot afford” for the Speaker race to last too long.

“We cannot have another chaotic turnover of Speaker before next year's election and think it's not gonna impact our results,” she warned.

McDaniel’s comments come in the wake of intense disputes over government spending and a potential shutdown, alongside the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his leadership role earlier this week.

McDaniel acknowledged the two leading contenders for the Speakership, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), as capable, but emphasized the need for a swift and united decision. “Let’s not have leaks. Let’s make sure we come out united,” she stated.

Why It Matters: This came after McDaniel, earlier this week, expressed concerns about intra-party conflicts within the GOP, questioning how it would aid in defeating President Joe Biden in 2024.

She highlighted the need to focus on Biden’s policies rather than Republican infighting. “We're about a year out from a critical election where we have a great Senate map, we’ve got to hold the House, and we can win the White House,” she said.

Meanwhile, the former Speaker of the House, McCarthy, dismissed any speculation of his early resignation from Congress before his term ends in 2025 after being ousted from speakership.
