Chris Christie Predicts Trump's Legal Troubles Following Meadows' Immunity Deal: 'He's Going To Be Convicted. … It's Over'

In the latest development, former New Jersey Governor and Republican presidential candidate, Chris Christie, has predicted that ex-President Donald Trump will face conviction in his ongoing legal proceedings.

What Happened: Christie gave a forecast on Tuesday morning, suggesting an uphill battle for Trump in his legal affairs. As reported by The Hill, Christie's comments come in the wake of former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows being granted immunity in the case. Meadows, a close associate of Trump during the 2020 campaign, has agreed to testify against the former president.

Christie said about the development, “this is deadly, it's done. He's going to be convicted. … It's over."

In August, federal prosecutors indicted Trump for alleged attempts to remain in power following his loss in the 2020 election. Although Meadows was not charged as part of the Justice Department’s special counsel Jack Smith's case, he was indicted alongside Trump and 17 others in Georgia over an alleged plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

Christie, a former federal prosecutor, expressed his belief that Trump cannot delay his legal proceedings, despite his ongoing presidential campaign. Additionally, he pointed out that Trump was the only defendant indicted by Smith in the Jan. 6 case, a strategic decision to prevent defense attempts for delay.

Why It Matters: Despite Trump’s legal issues, he is currently leading the Republican presidential primary by a significant margin, according to recent polling from Morning Consult. However, his GOP lead did slip slightly, according to a Benzinga report from October 2023.

Christie, who is also a 2024 presidential candidate, has been openly critical of Trump. In September 2023, he made headlines by stating that it was time to move on from Trump and Biden, referring to their conduct as troubling in a Benzinga article.

The former governor once considered a potential vice-presidential pick for Trump, has become one of the most vocal GOP candidates opposing him, as per another Benzinga report .
