Is Tesla Bringing Back Its Media Team? New Job Listing Suggests So, Years After Elon Musk Said Other Companies Spend Money On 'Manipulating Public Opinion'

Tesla Inc. TSLA is looking to hire a vehicle communications manager at its factory in Fremont, California, in a possible move toward restoring a media team.

What Happened: The job description says that the new hire will be responsible for managing all external data communication relating to vehicle programs and coordinating efforts with external media.

“This includes closely collaborating with technical staff on vehicle metrics, managing external vehicle data to achieve consistency and accuracy, approving website content and enabling external media access to assess product,” the job description reads.

The expected compensation for the role ranges from $112,000 to $168,000 in annual salary coupled with cash and stock awards. The ideal candidate must, however, have over 5 years of experience in product marketing and sales.

Why It Matters: Musk is a critic of mainstream media, often terming it “propaganda.”

Unlike most companies that actively engage with the media, Tesla does not respond to media queries. It has reportedly not had a dedicated public relations department since October 2020. The broader communication strategy of Tesla relies heavily on Musk and various Tesla handles on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

“Other companies spend money on advertising & manipulating public opinion, Tesla focuses on the product. I trust the people,” Musk said in 2021 when The Future Fund’s Gary Black asked him to hire a public relations person.

Earlier this year, Tesla also laid off its marketing team in the U.S. with Musk saying that the ads made by the team failed to impress him.
