Why It Matters: The 2024 presidential election could go down as the political event that changed prediction markets forever. Billions of dollars were wagered on Polymarket and CFTC-regulated market Kalshi.
Polymarket, which had many prediction markets for the 2024 election, does not currently offer 2028 markets. The decentralized platform allows users to deposit funds using USDC USDC/USD via the Polygon POL/USD network or directly from a crypto account with Ethereum ETH/USD. The platform will be closely watched in the coming months to see who takes the early lead in 2028 election betting.
No candidate has officially declared their intentions to run for president on Nov. 7, 2028. With Trump unable to run for president again, barring a change to the U.S. Constitution, it is likely that Vance would be the frontrunner to win the Republican Party nomination.
The betting odds and prediction markets also list Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump suggesting that someone in the Trump family could seek to continue their father's legacy.
For the Democratic Party, things could look different in 2028 depending on if Harris, who lost the 2024 election, decides to run again. Harris was the party's nominee after Joe Biden stepped down from the race.
Along with prediction markets, Robinhood Markets HOOD got in on the fun with election contracts offered on the 2024 election winner. After a successful initial venture into politics, Robinhood hinted it could have more sports betting options available in the future.
Sportsbook giant DraftKings Inc DKNG could also have election betting in the future, based on past comments from CEO Jason Robins. DraftKings offered 2024 election betting in Canada.
Robins previously told Benzinga the company is continuing to work with regulators to get election betting approved for states that offer legalized betting. With the election more than three years away, there is a chance that the U.S. could have more legalized betting options for political outcomes the next time a presidential race is decided.
