Lucid Motors Inc. LCID CEO Peter Rawlinson envisions the EV company being more of a supplier than a carmaker in the future, similar to the ambitions of Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO Elon Musk.
What Happened: In an interview with InsideEVs at the BloombergNEF Summit in San Francisco, Rawlinson said that he would prefer 20% of Lucid’s future business to be about making cars and the remaining 80% about licensing.
“Because the vision I have for Lucid is: Just as there's an Intel inside your laptop, there's a Lucid inside a Honda or a Toyota,” he reportedly said without specifying a timeline for when he envisions it.
Lucid makes cars as a means of showcasing and marketing its products, he said. The company intends to make a million cars per year by the early 2030s.
British carmaker Aston Martin signed a deal with Lucid in 2023 for technology including electric powertrains and battery systems. However, Aston Martin is yet to launch a battery electric car.
In the future, however, Rawlinson expects to license Lucid’s tech to rivals, so they make their components.
“You flash your Microsoft Office—ka-chunk—Bill Gates gets his royalty, doesn't he? And I want to be like that,” Rawlinson reportedly said.
However, the CEO also clarified that this is merely his vision for the company and there is no guarantee that it will happen.
Giant Paves The Way: Musk, also, likewise, is attempting to make Tesla more than a carmaker. The billionaire CEO has often reiterated that Tesla is not a carmaker but an AI and robotics company with efforts to build humanoid robots and develop autonomous driving technology. Tesla is also attempting to license its full self-driving driver assistance technology to rival automakers.
However, automotive revenue accounted for nearly 79% of Tesla’s overall revenue in 2024.
