On Tuesday, Apple Inc. AAPL renamed the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America on its Maps app, following an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on his first day in office.
What Happened: The U.S. government officially updated its maps to reflect the new name. Apple is rolling out the change for U.S. users first, with a global update coming soon.

Alphabet Inc.'s GOOG GOOGL Google already made the switch on its Maps app earlier this week.
However, Microsoft Corp.'s MSFT Bing Maps and MapQuest Inc. have yet to follow suit, reported Bloomberg.
Why It Matters: Apple’s decision to rename the gulf comes amid criticism from Republican lawmakers for not immediately complying with Trump’s order.
U.S. Representative Greg Steube expressed disapproval on Facebook, stating that Apple is “still lost at sea.”

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum formally requested Google to reconsider the renaming. Sheinbaum criticized the decision and humorously suggested renaming the United States as “Mexican America” in response to Trump’s order.
Price Action: Apple's stock rose 0.095% to $232.84 in after-hours trading, following a 2.18% increase to $232.62 at Tuesday’s close, according to Benzinga Pro.
