U.S. auto safety regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Monday gave Tesla Inc.’s TSLA stainless steel Cybertruck a 5-star overall safety rating.

What Happened: The 5-star overall safety rating was announced by Tesla as well as CEO Elon Musk across its social media platforms.

“Cybertruck is apocalypse-level safe,” Musk said in a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

“…the lowest overall probability of injury & lowest chance of rollover of any pickup truck tested by NHTSA,” the company said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The rating, Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill said, applies to both model year 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks.

Why It Matters: Cybertruck is the latest offering from Tesla with a starting price of $79,990. The company started delivering the vehicle in November 2023.

Tesla touts the Cybertruck as durable and rugged enough to go anywhere. While the stainless steel exoskeleton is capable of withstanding bullets, the armor glass windows can resist class 4 hail, according to the company.

However, the lack of a rating from an independent rating agency had raised doubts about the company’s promises.

NHTSA issued the rating after a test simulating a head-on collision between two similar vehicles.
