Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk on Sunday said that the EV company could consider a software update enabling the car to honk at people on identifying keying incidents.
What Happened: “Car could honk at people if you want,” Musk wrote on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. The CEO was responding to a user who requested a software update that allows for alarms in case the vehicle gets keyed.
The practice of individuals damaging vehicle exteriors or paint jobs using keys or similar objects is something that poses trouble to vehicle owners across brands and countries.
Why It Matters: Tesla offers the sentry mode on its Model S, 3, X, Y, and the Cybertruck to guard against potential threats such as someone attempting to open a door/ trunk or if it identifies sudden jerky motions synonymous with being towed or shaken. If the sentry mode is activated, the cameras on the vehicle remain powered on to record any suspicious activity around the vehicle when it is locked and parked. On a threat being detected, the driver will receive an alert on their mobile app, and footage recorded by the cameras will be saved to a USB drive.
However, the sentry mode does not protect from all possible threats as it uses many factors to determine if to activate the security alarm. The alarm may not activate in all situations, the company warns.
