Tesla TSLA is facing serious trouble in Canada. Not only have the company's sales plummeted, but a growing number of Canadians are pushing for extreme measures against CEO Elon Musk. A new poll shows that 71% of Canadians support banning Tesla sales in the country, while a petition demanding the revocation of Musk's Canadian citizenship has gathered 364,000 signatures—and counting.

Tesla Sales in Canada Are Crashing

Tesla sales in Canada have nosedived, with a 70% drop between December and January, according to the Toronto Star. However, the decline isn't just affecting Tesla—EV and plug-in hybrid vehicle sales across the board have fallen 79% in the same period, largely due to the federal government pausing EV rebates.

Don't Miss:

That said, Musk's growing unpopularity could make Tesla's problems even worse. Connections with President Donald Trump and Musk's support for Germany's far-right AfD party have led to a backlash in multiple countries, including Canada, where Musk is now facing calls for his citizenship to be revoked.

Hundreds of Thousands Want Musk's Citizenship Revoked

A petition initiated by Qualia Reed of British Columbia accuses Musk of “engaging in activities that go against the national interest of Canada.” It claims that Musk has “used his wealth and power to influence our elections” and “has now become a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty.” The petition demands that Musk's Canadian citizenship and passport be revoked immediately.

As of now, the petition has amassed a little over 364,000 signatures, but due to the prorogation of Parliament, it cannot be officially presented until March 24. It is sponsored by Charlie Angus, a member of parliament from the New Democratic Party.

Musk, for his part, initially responded to the petition on X with a short but dismissive message: “Canada is not a real country.” The post was later deleted.

Tesla's Global Sales Are Also Tanking

Musk's political ties aren't just a problem in Canada—they're hurting Tesla's sales worldwide. In Germany, Tesla sales dropped by 76% in February compared to the same month in 2024, per the German Federal Motor Transport Authority. Across Europe, registrations fell 45% from January 2024 to this past January, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

The decline is not limited to Europe. Tesla sales in Australia fell by nearly 72% in Feb. 2025, while in California—the largest EV market in the U.S.—Tesla sales dropped 12% for all of  2024, marking declines in all four quarters.

Some former Tesla owners have reportedly begun selling their vehicles to distance themselves from Musk. Many environmentally conscious and left-leaning consumers now view Tesla as a brand tied to far-right politics, which could have lasting consequences for the company.

With the 71% support for a Tesla ban revealed in a recent Angus Reid poll, it's clear that opposition to Musk and his company is growing in Canada. If the federal government takes action against Tesla or revisits EV subsidies in the future, it could have significant effects on the company's already struggling sales.

Meanwhile, the petition to revoke Musk's citizenship remains open for signatures until June 20. Whether or not the government will act on it is uncertain, but the overwhelming public response signals that many Canadians see Musk as a direct threat to the country's sovereignty.
