International Flavors & Fragrances, Inc. IFF disclosed the creation of a joint venture, Alpha Bio, in collaboration with Kemira.
The joint venture, which will operate independently in Finland, is focused on the commercial-scale production of renewable biobased materials.
The Alpha Bio facility, which has an investment of around 130 million euros ($140 million), is set to begin operations in late 2027.
It will convert up to 44,000 MT of plant sugars into bioproducts, including high-performance biopolymers for use in home and personal care and industrial applications.
The production will leverage IFF’s Designed Enzymatic Biomaterial (DEB) platform technology, integrated at IFF’s biorefinery in Kotka, Finland.
IFF’s DEB platform uses biotechnology to convert plant sugars into tailored biopolymers through an efficient enzymatic process.
These sustainable biopolymers replace fossil-based polymers, offering superior purity, consistency, and enhanced performance across various applications.
The project is expected to create around 30 direct jobs in Kotka, with additional employment opportunities during construction.
Erik Fyrwald, IFF CEO, added, “Our partnership with Kemira has reached a significant milestone, enabling us to scale the production of groundbreaking biobased materials to meet the large and growing demand for high-performing and sustainable alternatives to fossil-derived polymers.”
