J.P. Morgan Asks If Cable's AWS Spectrum Could Become Part Of Sprint's 4G Ecosystem

According to J.P. Morgan, Sprint Nextel S could be looking to deal with Cable's AWS Spectrum. J.P. Morgan said that, with LightSquared looking less viable, at least near term, it believes Sprint could turn to other potential 4G partners, including Clearwire and the 20 MHz of AWS spectrum owned by cable companies under the SpectrumCo JV. “We also expect cable to see increasing pressure over time to light up or sell the SpectrumCo asset. One solution, the subject of recent speculation (see FierceWireless, June 16), would put SpectrumCo's licenses to work as part of Sprint's shared network. The cable companies could go further, in our view, and swap their 15% stake in Clearwire for Sprint shares. However, it is important to flag that none of the cable companies involved has mentioned these possibilities.” Sprint Nextel closed yesterday at $5.43.
