Augmented reality can be combined with diminished reality to provide a “greater visual impact,” and this combination could boost the AR market projections, a report by Loup Ventures quoted Augment CMO Lindsay Boyajian as saying.
What Is Diminished Reality?
While most have heard of augmented reality and virtual reality, few know about diminished reality. DR is the opposite of augmented reality.

Boyajian explained that while AR “enhances our reality” by overlaying digital elements on the physical, DR reduces or eliminates unwanted parts of the physical world.
The AR-DR combination is referred to as mediated reality, which “alters our perception of reality by adding and removing information through a device such as a headset or smartphone in real time,” Boyajian wrote.
Impact On AR
Digi-Capital expects the AR market to reach $83 billion by 2021. The combination of AR and DR could boost this projection, as visual experiences “that couldn’t be achieved with AR alone can now be realized,” Boyajian mentioned. She added that DR “opens up new opportunities for AR,” since this attracts dollars that may have otherwise been invested in alternative technologies (like virtual reality) to AR.
