3 Things To Look For In Tesla's Q2 Earning Report

In less than two decades, Tesla Inc TSLA went from upstart to the most valuable car company in the world, turning mainstream electric vehicles from a thing of science fiction to reality.

Tesla reports second-quarter earnings on Wednesday after the market closes. The EPS and sales numbers are always important, with consensus estimates of looking for a loss of 11 cents per share and sales of $5.23 billion, but each company has its own specific projects and updates to look out for. Here are three things to look for in Tesla’s earnings report.

1. Delivery/Production: Tesla is still a relatively new company with a lot of demand. As it takes time to build infrastructure, it can sometimes be hard for Tesla to keep up with demand. Delivery and production numbers can directly impact Tesla’s stock. The Shanghai Factory will continue to ramp up production once complete.

"We think an additional U.S. factory (likely Texas) could be announced in the near term, as well," Baird analyst Ben Kallo of Baird wrote in a July 17 note.

2. Future Growth Drivers: “Tesla has numerous projects underway which could contribute to growth over time,” said Kallo. These projects include:

  • Increased production capacity
  • Future vehicle introductions
  • Tesla Energy
  • Recurring revenue

Notable updates on these projects could impact Tesla’s growth, and as some investors buy a stock expecting the company to grow, it could change investor’s opinions on the stock.

3. China Relations: The EV company has invested a lot in its Shanghai Factory. Once complete, it will be responsible for the production of multiple vehicles in Tesla’s lineup. U.S.-China relations could act as a headwind if tensions rise.

Interest in Chinese EV maker NIO NIO is rising, but when asked if China will favor Nio over Tesla, Ivan Feinseth of Tigress told Benzinga, “It will come down to consumer choice and of course cost which tariffs will play a major issue but Tesla will make their cars that are sold in China in China.”
