Ahead Of iPhone 15 Launch, Analyst Says Apple-Huawei Rivalry Good News For Consumers

  • With the Huawei threat, Apple could be forced to step out of its comfort zone and innovate more aggressively, says a tech analyst.
  • Apple's iPhone launch event is scheduled for Tuesday, with four news variants expected to be announced.

One of the factors that weighed down on Apple, Inc.’s AAPL stock last week was the potential competitive threat posed by Huawei’s new phone. One analyst, however, said he sees the Huawei threat as good news for consumers.

The initial batch of Huawei's Mate 60 Pro, priced at $960, reportedly sold out within hours of the commencement of presale, and interested customers have continued to place orders for future purchases.

“It can force Apple to step out of its comfort zone and innovate more aggressively,” said Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at Taiwan-based TFI Securities, on X on Friday, while noting that the two standard iPhone 15 models are the first smartphones to adopt stacked CIS.

CIS is a low-power imaging device with a complementary metal oxide-semiconductor, or CMOS, structure, which converts light energy into electrical energy to create images, and functions similar to film in a camera.

Kuo said that, if there had been no U.S. ban, Huawei would have been the first smartphone brand to adopt stacked CIS, and that the adoption would have happened before 2023.

Apple has scheduled its “Wonderlust” iPhone 15 launch event for Tuesday in which it is expected to unveil the latest iteration of its iPhone.

Apple closed Friday’s session up 0.35% at $178.18, according to Benzinga Pro data.
