Citigroup Says 350,000+ Accounts Were Compromised

Citigroup Inc. C said that a cyber attack that compromised its customers personal information exposed more than 350,000 North American Citigroup credit card accounts. In total, 360,083 accounts were affected, and 217,657 of those customers received reissued cards. Citi is only the latest victim of cyber attacks by anonymous hackers. Sony SNE, Lockheed Martin LMT, and the Senate have all recently succumbed to a hacking attack of some sort. According to a Reuters report, "Citigroup had earlier said that about 1 percent of its North American accounts were affected. The bank's annual report puts the total number of its customers at 21 million." "It is mainly due to the actual number of accounts being more than what's in the 2010 annual report as well as variances such as some of the accounts being closed," United States-based Citi spokesman Sean Kevelighan said in an emailed response." Customer names, account numbers and contact information were exposed, but not security codes or social security numbers. Citi said that the information was accessed on May 24 and it told customers of the breach on June 3.
