In the latest chapter of litigation between the two technology giants, Apple AAPL has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics in South Korea over smartphone patents.
The two companies have exchanged multiple legal shots in recent years, especially over technology patents. Samsung has just filed suit against Apple in multiple countries after the iPhone-maker claimed Samsung's Galaxy products were attempted copies of its popular products.
The smartphone market has increasingly tested the legal arsenal that tech companies carry. Numerous patents related to radios, user interfaces, and other technology exist, and it can be a minefield of potential infringement for manufacturers.
Apple is no stranger to legal wars. It recently settled a lawsuit with Nokia NOK over smartphone technology. What's especially noteworthy about the Apple-Samsung litigation is Apple's reliance on Samsung for semiconductors.
According to a Reuters report, "Last week, a lawyer for Apple said in a U.S. court that executives "at the highest levels" of both companies are in talks about patent litigation. This was after the judge referenced the close business relationship between the two companies to resolve the case through alternative dispute resolution outside the court."
It's expected that some type of undisclosed deal will be reached, barring any unforeseen events.
