PURE Bioscience, Inc. PURE today announced that it has completed the first Generally Recognized as Safe self-affirmation for SDC when used on food processing equipment, machinery and utensils. A committee of independent experts critically reviewed efficacy and toxicity data for SDC and the SDC-based PURE™ Hard Surface disinfectant and food contact surface sanitizer. The committee found no evidence that SDC demonstrates a hazard to the public when used as a contact biocide on food contact surfaces and food-use utensils and therefore concluded this use as generally recognized as safe. PURE's GRAS status sets the stage for additional GRAS projects to determine SDC's suitability as an indirect and direct food additive in food processing. “Having GRAS designation puts PURE Hard Surface in a league of its own as we move into the food processing market,” said Tom Myers, PURE Bioscience's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “GRAS resonates strongly in the industry, and eases the challenge of introducing a completely new technology by providing customers with assurance that, in spite of its powerful antimicrobial activity, SDC is safe. In addition, customers are assured that SDC will not negatively impact their food products or processes. Looking ahead, this GRAS designation also lays the groundwork for expansion of SDC applications as a food additive.”
