But it would be huge news for Sprint.
Yesterday, BGR posted what it referred to as an exclusive story on the iPhone 5, claiming that it would be coming exclusively to Sprint's S network in 2011. Meanwhile, AT&T T and Verizon VZ will have to wait until next year to begin selling Apple's AAPL next phone.
Of course, this so-called “exclusive” story on a Sprint-exclusive iPhone stems from a tweet by the Wall Street Journal.
“I have been going back and forth for weeks with one of my incredibly solid industry contacts on a piece of information that I couldn't really process at first — information that is so unbelievable, even from a source this solid, that I couldn't report it,” BGR wrote. “With this new WSJ report on an Apple/Sprint deal, however, it doesn't look so crazy.”
While the Journal is not to be ignored, I share Business Insider's skepticism.
Besides: the Journal's info does not say that the iPhone 5 will be exclusive to Sprint; it merely states that Sprint is pouring buckets of cash ($20 billion) into 30+ million iPhones over the next four years. That's not really all that surprising, now is it?
