A new gun company ad compares Obama's stance on gun control to that of Hitler, Stalin and other brutal dictators. The ad by USA Ammo, states that "tyranny and gun control is only an election away! Liberty is at peril every single day and with every breath we take. For 235 years, tyranny in the United States has been held at bay through US Citizen's right to bear arms."
The ad goes onto say that "USAAmmo.com believes tyranny is knocking down the doors of American cities daily. The recent Occupy Wall Street protests and liberal attempts at gun control are eerily reminiscent to the rise of Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot and Idi Amin. Barack Obama and Erik Holder, gun control advocates, are secretly conspiring to strip American Citizens of the right to bear arms."
The ad shows Obama's face next to those of dictators such as Hitler and Stalin. Trace Williams, the director of operations for USAAmmo, defended the ad to CBS News earlier this week. He said that "Obama and his various czars are infringing on the rights of Americans to own guns." He added that the company has received "unbelievable support" since the ad was put out and that "sales have gone through the roof."
While Williams and USAAmmo make some misinformed statements with regard to President Obama, such as saying that he is "obviously a socialist," and the ad is over the top, the message is important. First, it isn't socialism that is threatening this country, but rather fascism, and Obama's policies are more fascist than socialist. He was, after all, financed by the big banks and is beholden to the military-industrial-complex and the corporate class. That being said, the issue of gun control in the context of America today is of utmost importance.
Given the absolute degradation of the constitution and civil liberties in the wake of the "War on Terror," the last thing that Americans should be doing is allowing even one inch of encroachment on their second amendment rights. While USAAmmo is clearly pandering to fear with this latest ad, it is not unjustified, perhaps just sloppily articulated. The fact of the matter is that U.S. citizens should buy guns and lots of ammo, and many are doing just that. Guns are a reasonable hedge, and in today's world there are plenty of potential adverse events to hedge against.
