Couple Raises Money For Wedding By Recycling (AA)

A couple in Spokane, WA helped pay for their upcoming wedding by recycling aluminum cans, with a little help from Alcoa AA. Peter Geyer and Andrea Parrish collected 400,000 cans, worth about $3,800 in total. The last of the cans, about 73,000, will be picked up from their home this week by United Recycling Services, who donated the remaining number of cans so the couple could pay for their wedding. Peter and Andrea decided to tap their desire to protect their environment while raising money for their wedding. Alcoa donated 150,000 cans to their cause. Andrea and Peter said they will continue to collect cans to help pay for their honeymoon and will donate 60% of what they receive to the charities of Doctors Without Borders and the Rim Country Land Institute. Aluminum cans are infinitely recyclable and it takes 95% less energy to recycle cans that to make them from new aluminum. Shares of Alcoa finished the day down 43 cents, or 3.67%, to $11.29.
