Carl Icahn's Top Six Positions

Tuesday, Carl Icahn made news when he tweeted that he had dinner with Apple AAPL CEO Tim Cook to discuss increasing its share buyback.

Icahn revealed his long position in Apple on August 13 and according to his CNBC interview Tuesday, Icahn now owns about $2 billion worth of Apple stock representing a small position in the company.

But despite the very public Apple position, what other names does Icahn hold? He’s absolutely crushing the market this year so maybe there’s some value in looking at his portfolio. Here is some information from his most recent 13-F filing.

Icahn Enterprises IEP- His largest investment is in his own company. The stock is currently north of $86 but he owns 97 million shares that he purchased between $36.50 and $42.50 representing more than one-third of his portfolio.

CVR Energy CVI Icahn started purchasing CVR Energy in 2011. He owns 71.2 million shares representing 80 percent of the company. He purchased most of the position through a $35 tender offer. The stock currently trades at $38.81—down from around $70 in late May. The position represents nearly 16 percent of his portfolio.

DELL DELL Who can forget the epic battle with Dell that made for some great Wall Street drama this year? Icahn may have lost the battle but by the numbers, he’ll come out with a win once the deal to take Dell private is complete. The position represents about 9.5 percent of his portfolio purchased at a price around $13.89.

Forest Labs FRX This position, representing nearly six percent of Icahn’s portfolio, was purchased between $32.50 and $40 per share. The stock currently trades at $43.28 with Icahn owning about 11.5 percent of shares. This is definitely one of his activist battles. Icahn has already engaged in two proxy battles and was preparing for another.

Chesapeake Energy CHK His stake, representing about 5.6 percent of the portfolio was purchased between $14.50 and $23. The stock currently trades at $21.67. One of Icahn’s goals was to get the CEO removed—a goal he accomplished.

Netflix NFLX Representing about 5.5 percent of the portfolio, Netflix is a position Icahn often brags about. He purchased shares between $53 and $85 and it now traded at $324.62. This was originally an activist position but as the company reported better results and the stock soared, Icahn saw no reason to start a battle.

Other smaller positions include, Transocean RIG, Herbalife HLF, Nuance Communications NUAN, CVR Refining LP CVRR, Federal Mogul FDML, Hain Celestial HAIN, and others.

Note that these positions may have changed since Icahn’s last filing. Don’t commit money to these names based on Icahn’s positions. His portfolio is heavily hedged and the size of his positions and the activist approach he takes in many of his holdings makes his thesis much different than smaller investors. On the other hand, he tends to purchase what he believes to be undervalued companies so researching these names is still a good idea.

Disclosure: At the time of this writing, Tim Parker had no position in any of the mentioned companies.
