Apple's iPhone 6 Could Have a Curved, Pressure-Sensitive Display

Apple AAPL is ready to get in on the curved phone bandwagon.

The Cupertino, California-based tech giant has yet to release a smartphone as large as Samsung's SSNLF 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3, but the company sees value in the curved format.

It is unclear what special benefits may come with a curved iPhone, but there is one interesting feature: the device might contain a pressure-sensitive display.

According to Bloomberg, there will be sensors that can distinguish between light and heavy touches.

This could drastically change the way apps are developed. Games could benefit the most, but there are many ways  a pressure-sensitive screen could be utilized. Imagine an app that uses this feature to detect accidental butt dials and triggers a verbal alarm: "Help, you're sitting on me!"

Gimmicks aside, this would be another unique feature for Apple to utilize before its South Korean competitor. In September, Apple successfully released the first smartphone with a 64-bit processor. This unexpected feature seemed to have caught Samsung by surprise. The Galaxy smartphone maker is now working on its own 64-bit smartphone, but it could be a while before that device is released.

In addition to the curved display and pressure-sensitive screen, Apple is also looking to expand the size of its devices. According to the Bloomberg report, the curved iPhone will come in two versions -- one with a display at 4.7 inches, another at 5.5 inches. Both iterations are due in the second half of 2014.

This report should quash the rumor that Apple will release a larger iPhone in the first or second quarter. In doing so, the Mac maker would deal with the same challenges it encountered last year when the iPad Mini was released. Apple remedied this issue by releasing another upgrade of the full-size iPad.

Unless Apple plans to do the same for its smartphones next year, don't expect to Apple to release another iPhone before the third quarter.
