The CDMA version Apple's AAPL already has a codename and it's an odd one: N92, reports Electronista.
The long awaited CDMA version of the iPhone is at the stage known as Engineer Validation Test (EVT) stage. The next stage is Design Validation Test (DVT), which is often the precursor to launch. While many expect this version of the iPhone to go to Verizon, it may still yet go to cell phone carriers such as Sprint, US Cellular, or perhaps it is being prepped to be shipped abroad.
With over 90 million subscribers, Verizon is the largest CDMA network and is generally thought to be the frontrunner for the phone.
If Verizon does get the iPhone as so many speculate, this could be a crushing blow for Google's GOOG Android operating system, as it has enjoyed rampant growth with Verizon users. Many expect subscribers would move over to the more popular and sexy iPhone if given the opportunity.
The company most at risk if a Verizon iPhone is eventually revealed would be AT&T T as many predict it would lose thousands upon thousands of subscribers instantly and many more overtime as their contracts expire.
Investors may want to begin accumulating shares of Verizon and Apple for a longer term hold on this news. January is expected to be the date that Apple announces the move over to Verizon and shares of both companies would instantly spike on this news. In the meantime, investors can sit back and collect Verizon's massive dividend as talked about here and Apple's tremendous earnings growth.
Investors may also want to begin scaling out of AT&T as the January date gets closer and closer if they believe that Verizon gets the iPhone.
