Oppenheimer is out with an industry update, where it begins by touching on Intel’s recent agreement to acquire Texas Instruments’ cable modem product line. Analysts note, “The purchase enhances Intel's focus on the cable industry and related consumer electronics (CE) market segments, where the company's expertise in building advanced system-on-chip (SoC) products, based on Intel(R) Atom(TM) processors, will be applied.” The deal is expected to close in 4Q10.
On a different note, Asustek Computer has lowered its 3Q10 netbook shipments goal, as second quarter sales fell short of expectations due to Apple’s Ipad. The third quarter is traditionally peak sales period, but the company has downwardly adjusted its target shipments.
On a final note, Smooth-Stone Inc. has raised $48M from a group of investors including ARM, Advanced Technology Investment Co., and Texas Instruments Inc. Oppenheimer writes, “The capital will be used to develop high-performance, low-power chips, said to 'change the server market and the makeup of data centers.” Smooth-Stone has yet to announce a product, but it most likely will be based on ARM’s Technology.
