7 Technology Partners Enhancing Levi's Stadium

For anyone who ever wondered what Silicon Valley could accomplish in a sports stadium, wonder no more.

When the home of the San Francisco 49ers, also known as Levi’s Stadium, opens in two months, the football world will learn what happens when tech giants collaborate with the NFL.

The $1.3 billion Santa Clara, California home of the 49ers will showcase cutting-edge technology in a way never seen before. The array of awesomeness will be provided by seven partners including founders, Brocade BRCD, Comcast CMCSA, Intel INTC, SAP AG SAP, and Yahoo! Inc. YHOO, all of whom signed 10-year deals at an annual buy-in in the mid-seven figures, according to SportsBusinessDaily.

Two additional companies, Sony SNE and Violin Memory VMEM come in slightly lower than founding partner level, according to Ethan Casson, the 49ers’ chief revenue officer.

Three additional Bay area tech firms were negotiating for a seat at the table – all of them below founding partner level as well.

Although sitting in the heart of Silicon Valley may have pre-ordained involvement on the part of some of the world’s most important tech companies, the technology these companies will offer to the sports world is nothing short of amazing.

Brocade’s technology will run the new stadium's IPTV network, security and audio systems and concessions points-of-sale. More importantly, thanks to Brocade, fans will be able to use mobile devices to locate the shortest lines for restrooms. This simple but welcome feature will be available nowhere else in the NFL.

Although plans were not complete, Intel’s microchip processors, which will operate hundreds of stadium systems, will also come into play in Intel Plaza where fans will be expected to be able to interact in a variety of Intel research projects.

SAP will have seven activation points inside and outside the stadium including touch-screen displays where kids could develop their own social media avatars using favorite 49ers players as a starting point.

In addition, SAP will sponsor kiosks for adults that feature game analysis and historical information.

The Yahoo brand name will grace the Yahoo Fantasy Football Lounge at Levi’s Stadium, opening up a virtual world of possibilities for fantasy buffs of all ages.

Comcast Xfinity Couches, a seat upgrade program will augment the company’s interest in team Wi-Fi and video-on-demand business.

A state-of-the-art Wi-Fi infrastructure will allow fans to do everything from check fantasy football stats, post on social media, and use a free Levi’s Stadium app to order food, beverages and merchandise.

Personal high-definition replays on smartphones and mobile devices will be available seconds after a play completes.

Technology will even allow fans to locate their car after the game.

Paraag Marathe, 49ers President said succinctly, "What we're building is the physical manifestation of Silicon Valley."
